Miami Vice HD DVD/DVD Combo, Dec 5...

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has indicated that Miami Vice (2006) will be due on HD DVD/DVD Combo format disc, this coming Dec 5, day-and-date with the DVD release.

The HD DVD side will feature the 2h 20mins Director's Cut (Unrated) while the DVD side will feature the 2h 13 mins theatrical cut. As usual, the main feature on the HD DVD side will be presented in 1080p High Definition Widescreen 2.40:1 with Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English) audio, while its DVD side counterpart will be presented in Anamorphic Widescreen 2.40:1 will Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

A Note to Readers: As with many of the earlier Universal Studios HD DVD releases, the release information and release specs provided are still possibly subject to changes because no official press release were originally provided for them, so these titles which Universal Studios have indicated to be released on HD DVD may still be withdrawn anytime before the title is originally due at retail. But we will try to keep up with any confirmed changes.

Sadly, The Hulk HD DVD has currently been removed from Universal Studios' release plans, this is confirmed by the studio, distribution and retail sources. Maybe because King Kong HD DVD will be bundled with Xbox 360 HD DVD player, more dual-layered disc pressing is probably needed to be done for King Kong and hence The Hulk HD DVD release had to be postponed... this is the only explanation I can come up with that makes sense since both The Hulk and King Kong were originnally due at retail on the same day.

With The Hulk removed, it seems logical that Universal Studios is planning on a Nov 14 release for Accepted on HD DVD/DVD Combo.

Superman Returns on HD DVD, Nov 28

Warner Home Video has announced that Superman Returns will be due on HD DVD/DVD Combo Format disc, Nov 28. It will be priced at $39.99 SRP. They have even went as far as placing an advertisement on Home Media Retailing magazine (Thanks to readers who've provided this info.) which lists the HD DVD Combo priced at $39.99 SRP.

As I've yet to see the press release for this HD DVD release to further confirm that its really a HD DVD/DVD Combo, I would add that spec changes are possible... although quite unlikely.

The DVD side of this HD DVD/DVD Combo release will be similar to the standalone single-disc DVD release. For the HD DVD side, previous interviews with Director Bryan Singer suggests that In-Movie Experience! will being done for this HD DVD and we've been informed about the inclusion of In-Movie Experience!. It is also possible that the bonus materials on the second disc of the 2-disc DVD release will be ported over to the HD DVD side or that the In-Movie Experience! bonus feature have made some of the featurettes and documentaries redundant, therefore some of them will not be included. But these are all speculations until an official press release from Warner Home Video becomes available.

For more information on the various configurations of HD DVD/DVD Combo, you may want to check out my explanation.

This is good news especially with King Kong coming to HD DVD. It seems that King Kong will be on HD DVD instead, not on a combo disc. Personally, I suspect that King Kong HD DVD may be a 2-disc set...

Warner commits 5 more titles on HD DVD, Oct 10...

Warner Home Video has announced that Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Polar Express, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will all be due on HD DVD, this Oct 10. These HD DVD titles will each be available for $28.99 SRP. All bonus materials on the Standard Definition versions of these titles will be included on the HD DVDs.

Expect the main feature on all these HD DVD titles to be presented in 1080p High Definition 16x9 (OAR) video with Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 audio. Dolby TrueHD audio tracks will be available on Batman Begins and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (music-only).

"Batman Begins" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" make their HD DVD debut with In-Movie Experience (IME), the interactive feature allowing viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material -- while the movie is running. The IME for "Batman Begins" gives viewers a window into director Christopher Nolan's personal journey bringing a new look and new direction to Batman, illustrated with comics, cast comments and behind the scenes footage that gives each scene new meaning. The IME for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" offers rare glimpses into director Tim Burton's creative process, scene by scene, that is at once insightful and turned on its head with comic Oompa Loompa interjections, unexpected chocolate fun facts and pop-ups.

Looks like we're set for a wild ride on HD DVD format this holiday season...

Warner engineers coming up with a triple-standard disc?

Just found something interesting while reading some online news article...

An exerpt from the article...

"Warner’s plan is to create a disc with a Blu-ray top layer that works like a two-way mirror. This should reflect just enough blue light for a Blu-ray player to read it okay. But it should also let enough light through for HD-DVD players to ignore the Blu-ray recording and find a second HD-DVD layer beneath.

An ordinary DVD recording could be put on the other side, so that conventional DVD players can read the disc as well.

Although the triple-standard disc will cost more to make, it should still be cheaper than pressing three, and shops should be pleased not to have their shelves overloaded with so many different discs."

I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't want to pay extra for the main feature on the Blu-ray layer of such a triple-standard disc, since I'd be viewing Warner movies on HD DVD.

Wild Bear's last blogpost for quite sometime...

Hello frequent visitors to this blog,

This post will be the last that I will make on this blog for quite sometime...

Due mainly to other commitments taking up more time now than before and also because the need to spend more time viewing the HD DVDs and DVDs that I've bought earlier, during my limited free time, I've decided to take a break from posting altogether. It does not mean I'll be abandoning this blog totally as my pal J.Z. will be doing blog updates but not on a frequent basis, probably weekly or fortnightly or random days, and I may just pop in once in a while to post some interesting stuff.

J.Z. will only be updating news and release information on North American/Japanese/European HD DVD titles during the period of my absence - he's more into the content side of things.

I'll probably return to my usual posting schedule just before/during the holiday season...

And lastly, a big thanks to all readers who have helped greatly by contributing information to be shared on this blog with the others ever since it was live online 8 months ago.

Hope to see you around when I return from my break...

HD DVD's "The Look and Sound of Perfect(TM)'' Takes Center Stage at the CEDIA EXPO 2006

Leading Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Unveil Latest HD DVD Players
HD DVD Continues to Lead the Way with More Titles from Leading Hollywood Studios

DENVER / Sept. 14, 2006--Today at the CEDIA EXPO 2006, the North American HD DVD Promotion Group showcased growing momentum behind the high definition format, announcing a lineup of hardware and content that deliver "The Look and Sound of Perfect(TM)". The group also launched the HD DVD Mobile Experience, a touring exhibition including an 18-wheeler outfitted with the latest HD DVD products and state-of-the-art video and sound equipment with stops planned in 10 major cities nationwide. With a strong showing of support from top consumer electronics, IT and entertainment partners, including Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video, Paramount Home Entertainment, HP, Intel, Microsoft and Toshiba, HD DVD continues to deliver on the promise of high definition experiences with more titles, superior picture and audio quality and unprecedented interactive features.

As part of the day's announcements, Toshiba launched its second generation HD DVD players for the U.S. market, the HD-A2 and HD-XA2. Both units offer an enhanced sleek cosmetic design with the HD-XA2 model designed to output 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, the highest HD signal currently available, via High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI(TM)) 1.3. HDMI(TM) version 1.3 is the most current, major enhancement of the HDMI(TM) specification, which more than doubles bandwidth speed and adds support for Deep Color technology. Toshiba's latest players are poised to continue momentum generated by the success of the HD-A1 and HD-XA1 models, which are estimated to be in approximately 25,000 U.S. homes already. The HD-A2 will begin shipping to U.S. retailers in October and the HD-XA2 in December with prices starting at $499 and $999 respectively. These new players compliment the existing roster of Toshiba and RCA/Thomsen HD DVD players on the market today.

Niveus Media Inc. also announced the release of its new HD DVD-enabled media center PCs. Supporting 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, these high-end media PCs feature up to four television tuners, 3TB of Storage, 4GB of Memory, ATI and Nvidia graphics, and 8-channel audio. The Rainier Edition, priced at $4,500, is the entry level model in the award-winning line of Niveus Summit Series Media Centers. Scheduled to ship at the end of September, these media centers will be among the first to offer HD DVD playback capability.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment added to the expanding roster of hit movies with the HD DVD release of the 2006 blockbuster "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," which will hit stores on September 26. "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" will deliver the most advanced interactive features for a movie to date by taking advantage of the flexible HDi(TM) authoring environment and mandatory features only HD DVD guarantees. Picture-in-picture director's commentary, GPS mapping of car scenes and even crash damage estimates provided by Progressive Direct are just some of the features consumers will be able to enjoy throughout the movie playback experience. In addition, "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" will be released as a combo disc that can be played in standard DVD players and in high definition.

"The reviews are in and HD DVD is hands down the leader in picture quality, audio experiences and interactive capabilities that have never been seen before," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "Look at the blogs, look at the reviews by the early adopters and even look at the mainstream media - HD DVD has maintained its first-to-market advantage and delivered on the promises of providing the best high definition image and sound quality at the best value for consumers today. Take today's announcement of new players from Toshiba, new PC hardware from Niveus and new titles like 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,' and add the hardware and movies that are coming this Fall and you can see why HD DVD is poised for a strong holiday."

The lineup of great titles available in HD DVD continues to grow with Warner Home Video's announcement of two highly anticipated titles. On October 10 Warner Home Video will release the 2005 blockbuster "Batman Begins," which includes brand new content in the In Movie Experience (IME), allowing consumers to enjoy this movie in a brand new way. On the same day, the popular animated holiday feature film "Polar Express," starring Tom Hanks, will make its debut in the HD DVD format.

The HD DVD Promotional Group also announced additional studio support, with Rhino Entertainment, a Warner Music Group company specializing in DVD, set to release three new titles: "The Eagles- Live In Melbourne;" "Cream- Live at the Royal Albert Hall;" and "James Taylor- A MusiCares Person of the Year Tribute," all on November 14, 2006. Image Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq:DISK - News), a leading independent licensee, producer and distributor of home entertainment programming in North America, recently announced its initial slate of HD DVD music titles including: "Chicago/Earth, Wind & Fire: Live at the Greek;" "Heart: Alive in Seattle;" and "Barry Manilow: Manilow Live!"

With more than 60 of the latest and best titles available from major studios, HD DVD already offers the most titles of any high definition format, with nearly 150 titles expected by the end of 2006 including "Mission: Impossible 3." Additionally, the backing of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment, HBO, New Line Home Entertainment and The Weinstein Company ensures HD DVD can deliver your favorite feature films and television programs.

HD DVD Gets A Second-Gen Hardware Boost Along With Long Awaited Titles

HD-A2 (Entry-level, $499.99 SRP, Oct 2006) and HD-XA2 (Higher-end, $999.99, Dec 2006) have been announced by Toshiba America at CEDIA 2006. Both should have the same audio decoding capabilities... still no dts-HD decoders, only standard DTS decoders on-board meaning you can playback DTS-HD audio tracks, but what you'll get is the audio decoded from the DTS (Core 5.1) stream of the DTS-HD audio track.

The areas where both are different includes the audio output connections...* and the fact that only the HD-XA2 will support 1080p video output & HDMI 1.3. More details soon.

* Awaiting full spec sheet

Warner Home Video has finally given HD DVD consumers a release date for its much long(to the power of infinity)-awaited title - Batman Begins - which was not only repeatedly being mentioned and demoed on various occasions... but was continually being "delayed". Now (and finally), Batman Begins (with IME) will be due on HD DVD this Oct 10 and Polar Express will due on HD DVD the same day.

HD DVD Mobile Experience in Denver, Colorado Convention Center, Sept 14 - 17

Exerpts from press release issued by North American HD DVD Promotional Group, Inc.:

Sept. 13 HD DVD is the only format approved by the DVD Forum that takes the best features of DVD -- the most successful audio/video product ever -- and enhances the cinematic experience with six-times better resolution and significantly better sound quality than regular DVDs. This translates into more explosiony-explosions in movies such as the "Bourne Supremacy" and more bloodcurdling screams in movies such as "Constantine." In addition, movies in HD DVD offer the bonus content you've come to expect from DVDs as well as unprecedented interactive capabilities available via Microsoft's HDi technology such as zooming, picture-in-picture director's commentaries and bookmarking of favorite clips.

"When it comes to HD DVD, seeing is believing, so we know consumers will be blown away when they experience movies in this format," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "HD DVD lets you truly experience your high-definition TV to its full potential."

That's why HD DVD, supported by top consumer electronics, entertainment, IT, and disc replication companies, is hitting the road this fall to help consumers experience first-hand the next generation in home entertainment.

The HD DVD Mobile Experience will tour cities across the country allowing consumers to plunge into the new world of high-definition and experience the very latest in HD technology. The centerpiece of the attraction is an 18-wheeler that will allow participants to step into "The Look and Sound of Perfect." In 1,200 square feet surrounding the trailer, individuals will explore the many ways to experience HD DVD, including a home theater system with the sharpest, most realistic picture and surround sound, the newest HD DVD-enabled laptops and PCs, and a gaming environment offering a sneak-preview of the much anticipated external HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 (available later this year). Every display at the HD DVD Mobile Experience will showcase the intense scenes, from high-speed chases to close-call rescues to futuristic fights, from some of the 150 Hollywood movies expected to be available in time for the 2006 holiday season.

In addition to the interactive, high-tech exhibits, one visitor to the HD DVD Mobile Experience in each city will have the chance to unlock "The Look and Sound of Perfect" and walk away with an HD DVD home theater system. Other prizes include gift cards to top home electronics retailers, HD DVD movie titles and more.

For tour dates and locations and for more information on HD DVD, visit http://www.TheLookAndSoundOfPerfect.com.

I suppose that the demonstrations/displays would better exhibit the capability of HD DVD than those found in some retail stores...

DTS has recently updated its company trademark logo with a major overhaul of its official website... with more focus on explaining and promoting its dts-HD high definition audio technologies. Click on the above image to get to the DTS-HD website...
