Full Details of Warner Home Video's June 6 HD DVDs

Warner Home Video has announced that Constantine, Firewall and The Perfect Storm will jump aboard the HD DVD format on June 6.

All titles except Firewall will use the HD-30 (SS-DL) discs. Firewall will be released on the HD DVD/DVD Combo discs, on which one side of the disc features the high-definition version of the movie while the other side features the standard definition version of the movie (this side is playable on standard DVD players).

As I've mentioned in my earlier HD DVD Rumors post about the use of Dolby TrueHD track and the inclusion of HD DVD exclusive bonus content on Constantine HD DVD, it has been confirmed that the Constantine HD DVD will indeed feature HD DVD exclusive bonus content and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio. And it looks like this HD DVD is due to reign the best HD DVD release in terms of visual, aural and interactive experience since the format debut in April, look at the first reviews of the disc here (High Def Digest).

The highlight of the HD DVD exclusive bonus content will be the "In Movie Experience" which Warner is specifically touting. It allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material -- while the movie is running -- to find out more about the filmmaking process.

Only Constantine will feature HD DVD exclusive bonus content on top of the usual DVD bonus content. All other titles will feature the same bonus materials as their DVD editions.

Chronos HD DVD Cover Artwork

Chronos will be released on HD DVD but it seems the release date is pretty much unconfirmed. The release will feature DTS 96/24 Digital Surround sound, an audio commentary by the director, composer and production manager, and a few featurettes. Cover artwork below.

HD DVD Titles Review Websites

By now, more than 20 HD DVD titles are available at retail stores, though in limited quantities for each title as the players sold were in limited quantities too.

As you can see this blogsite is unlikely (not impossible) to carry HD DVD reviews simply because me and my teammates which are currently contributing to this blog simply do not have the time to do so... And giving a quick and sub-par review may seem of little usefulness...

So we have scoured the Internet forums and search engines and found a few HD DVD review sites to be quite useful.

HD DVD Format News (May 27, 2006)

Next up, HD DVD format news...

Microsoft's renewed commitment to HD DVD

As reported earlier about Microsoft's renewed commitment to HD DVD format at WinHEC 2006 with native HD DVD support being built into the upcoming Windows Vista operating system, here is an article with a glimpse what that native HD DVD support meant.

Region Codes on HD DVD soon?

DVD Forum's 34th Steering Committee Meeting on May 24, 2006 has a few decisions made that maybe of interest to consumers. With those approvals for the HD DVD-R/RW (DL), it is likely we will be seeing HD DVD recorders available pretty soon... Another thing, "HD DVD RPC Ad hoc group to work with appropriate WGs to develop a specification and enforcement plan for RPC on HD DVD-Video including region map and requirements in consultation with the studios" is also approved. This means that Regional Playback Control (RPC), used in the DVDs, will be applicable to HD DVDs too. But this may be pretty much up to the studios to enforce them although the HD DVD players/drives will support RPC soon.
Full summary of the meeting here.

AACS LA Adopts Macrovision's Analog Content Protection (ACP)

Macrovision Corporation announced that its analog content protection technology (ACP) has been included as a requirement in the specification for the content protection technology for next-generation optical media content such as Blu-ray and HD DVD by the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator (AACS LA).

Image Constraint Token (ICT) flag is still not enabled on HD DVD titles and no image constraint over analog outputs? Could it be due to Macrovision's ACP? Possibly...

HD DVD Pre-recorded Content News (May 27, 2006)

First up, it will be the HD DVD content news...

This coming Tuesday, May 30 will be remembered as the Tuesday with no HD DVD releases, ever since the HD DVD format debut in U.S. on 18 April 2006 (officially) or 15 April 2006 (unofficially for early-birds who has gotten their HD-A1 early on that day).

About the would-be May 30 releases from Paramount

I believe some websites may have listed 3 Paramount HD DVD titles that will be released on May 30. But official sources have pulled the information and even earlier, there were some miscommunication with some websites listing a May 30 date and others June 20. I think we can be sure that Paramount is likely to start introducing its HD DVD titles and Blu-ray titles at the same time, which is the June/July period. So, the final word is that Four Brothers, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and U2: Rattle and Hum will not be released on May 30.

Universal Studios' August HD DVD Line-up

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced 4 titles to be released on the HD DVD format in August 2006.

8 August 2006
>> Ray (Descriptive Video Services® track included)

22 August 2006
>> The Bone Collector
>> The Interpreter
>> Spy Game

Bonus materials for each title to be confirmed though it is likely that the bonus materials on their DVD releases will be included in the HD DVD release. HD DVD exclusive content to be confirmed.

Warner Home Video June 6 HD DVD Releases

Warner Home Video has announced that Constantine, Firewall and The Perfect Storm will jump aboard the HD DVD format on June 6.

Constantine, their first HD DVD title with the new In-Movie Experience feature (IME). IME raises the bar of interactivity, allowing viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material -- while the movie is running -- to find out more about the filmmaking process. The IME for Constantine features director Francis Lawrence leading an exploration of the plot, stunts, characters and production of Constantine.
Want to see a small video preview of what "In Movie Experience" is? Check out this clip. (Many thanks to HD DVD DeGoGo for providing the clip).

Firewall will be WHV's second HD DVD and DVD Combo Format, released day-and-date with its standard DVD version.

Stay tuned for full details soon...

DTS-HD Master Audio used on first European HD DVD Release

2046 is the first European-produced HD DVD title that has contains the DTS-HD Master Audio (Lossless) track. DTS-HD Master Audio delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the master soundtrack for the next generation optical disc formats, whilst being fully backward compatible with all existing DTS-capable surround sound equipment.

That's all the content news there is for the moment (I hope...)

As May 30 is a free day with no new releases, I will be doing quite a few small posts with content relating to the past HD DVD releases and general HD DVD format information. So if you're interested, bookmark and stay tuned for it is coming soon...

Update: Microsoft introduces the HD DVD format with a longer possible list of titles that will be coming soon on the HD DVD format. The full list can be accessed here.

Hardware and Software Vendors Rally Behind HD DVD at WinHEC 2006

At the Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2006, Microsoft Corp. announced various PC manufacturers, independent hardware vendors (IHVs) and independent software vendors (ISVs) that are committed to supporting HD DVD in their respective products. Industry leaders showcased plans to ramp up support for HD DVD playback in PCs and on PC hardware and software in 2006 and early 2007. With a growing list of top movies available and favorable reviews of the latest HD DVD consumer electronics player already at retail, the community of hardware and software supporters for HD DVD continues to grow.

At the conference, Microsoft reiterated that Windows Vista will be shipped with the drivers, file system and other components necessary to support HD DVD playback. The company also gave a positive progress report on the state of third-party software players, and announced a new initiative designed to help ISVs implement VC-1 and iHD and create the best HD DVD playback solutions possible. This program will also provide iHD test vectors, sample code and more -- all of which will enhance third-party iHD implementations for Windows Vista.

The above are the main highlights, the full press release can be viewed here.

DTS-HD Master Audio used on first European HD DVD Release

DTS, Inc. announces that the first European-produced HD DVD will feature DTS-HD Master Audio as the exclusive lossless sound format on the disc. The release, 2046, was presented at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival to the President of the Feature Films Jury. Laurent Villaume, CEO of QOL who replicated the disc, presented the new title to Wong Kar Wai, the director of 2046. Set in a futuristic Hong Kong, the romance stars Tony Leung (Hero) and ZiYi Zhang (Memoirs Of A Geisha).

The audio for the 2046 HD DVD was encoded in DTS-HD Master Audio, which is DTS' newest surround sound technology extension for HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. DTS-HD Master Audio delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the master soundtrack for the next generation optical disc formats, whilst being fully backward compatible with all existing DTS-capable surround sound equipment.

Full press release can be viewed here.

An interesting tidbit from the Press Release:
QOL (Quantum Optical Laboratories) is France's foremost exclusive DVD pressing company.
And it boasts "An HD-DVD capacity of 2m/month" and I suppose '2m' means 2 million which works out to roughly 67,000 HD DVDs churned out per day, a notable figure, although it is not specified whether it refers to the HD-30 or HD-15 or both discs.

HD DVD Menus - Bourne Supremacy & Happy Gilmore

The Bourne Supremacy from Universal Studios will be the first HD DVD title that will start taking advantage of the capabilities that HD DVD format is able to provide. There will be a Picture-in-Picture screen-specific video commentary (Named "Presented by Toshiba: Bourne Instant Access") culled from various interviews and production featurettes included. If you only require the audio portion of the video commentary (to give your eyes a rest) , the audio-only option is also available.

The next title that uses similar capabilities will be Warner Home Video's Constantine HD DVD due on June 6. And Warner Home Video specifically calls it "In Movie Experience". Want to see a small video preview of what "In Movie Experience" is? Check out this clip. (Many thanks to HD DVD DeGoGo for providing the clip).

Just something extra, Universal Studios' Happy Gilmore will be due on HD DVD, June 13. Below is a preview of the menu. The only bonus content are deleted scenes and outtakes.

Stay tuned... More news and content coming up...

Full HD DVD Release List from HD DVD Promotion Group

HD DVD Promotion Group has made available almost the entire HD DVD titles release list (correct up to 17 May 06).

What's special about the release list as compared to many of the DVD sites including my own is that it also contains the entire list of HD DVDs released or due to be released in Japan.

So if you're eyeing the HD DVD titles released in Japan (whether Hollywood studios' films or local Japanese fare), the list may indeed be helpful in your online purchase. The list can be downloaded here (correct as on May 17). For an update-to-date list, you may have to check back the HD DVD Promotion Group main index page, the updated link is there on the frontpage.

Looking through most HD DVD related articles originating from Japanese end-users, it seems that the Japanese HD DVD releases have a mixed fare of titles encoded in VC-1 and MPEG-4 AVC with Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1, Dolby TrueHD 2.0 and/or DTS-HD 5.1.

A note about the release list: Some of the wordings are in Japanese although the release list seems clear enough in English.

HD DVD Rumors - Warner's Rumored May 30 HD DVD Titles

Please note that what I am about to say in the following paragraphs are purely rumors. Please take it with a pinch of salt until official announcements are made.

Details over some corners of the Internet seems to suggest that release date and pricing for 2 "major" HD DVD titles are confirmed. The rumors also suggest some release dates reshuffle is expected in Warner's planned HD DVD titles.

The 2 rumored HD DVD titles that is due from Warner on May 30 are:
>> Batman Begins (Special Edition)
>> Constantine

It is also rumored that both titles are very likely to have Dolby TrueHD 5.1 tracks on top of the usual Dolby Digital-Plus. HD DVD exclusive bonus materials may also be expected for both titles.

The pricing should be rather similar to other Warner HD DVD titles released.

We should know whether this rumor and any of the related rumors are true... before May 26. I do wish they are true...

Update: It seems that Twister and Lethal Weapon are also rumored contenders... for the May 30 release date. But choosing between Twister and Lethal Weapon, give me Twister with Dolby TrueHD 5.1. By the way, Twister was Warner's first DVD title and it also seems to be the first DVD title that Warner included a DTS 5.1 audio track. (Warner does not have a usual practice of including DTS tracks on DVDs as compared to Universal Studios).

Toshiba Corp. (Japan) releases first firmware update for HD-XA1

Toshiba's first HD DVD player that debut in Japan back in March , the HD-XA1, has been given a firmware update. It is available for download via the use of the Ethernet port with Broadband/Internet connection or by the request and reservation of the update on a CD-ROM via the Internet website (in Japanese) and/or fax. The update CD-ROM will take around 1 week for processing/sending.

The firmware update for the Japanese HD-XA1, is reportedly suppose to improve overall player performance, especially disc reading/loading efficiency. This is good news for the users who are experiencing a "significant" timelag on that machine than average DVD players, especially the time taken between loading the disc on the disc tray and appearance of the content on the display.

>> The article about the firmware update is here (in Japanese).
>> Official details from Toshiba (Japan) on how to get the firmware update for HD-XA1 (Japanese Market): here (in Japanese)

My guess is the update for the U.S. HD DVD players will not take too long and details should be announced soon. It may probably be already available on the Internet (Toshiba's server) for update via the Ethernet port with Internet connection.

As soon as I receive more information, I'll post them here...

Dolby TrueHD Trailer "Bit Harvest" Debut in Japan

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. has debut their newest addition to the library of audio format promotional trailers, the Dolby TrueHD (MLP Lossless) trailer, named "Bit Harvest" at the HD2 EMOTION demonstration event in the exclusive Omotesando Hills retail center of Japan.

Since TrueHD provides a lossless audio experience, the format sounds true to its "Bit Harvest" name as every bit of aural information is harvested efficiently and losslessly.

Hollywood blockbuster clips include Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King as well as 2 Fast 2 Furious, among others.

About Dolby TrueHD
