Taking a break...

As the title suggests, I will be taking a 'long' break from posting, probably the entire month of April. And will be back hopefully soon.

The other contributor, J.Z., will be popping in during my break to update the blog once in a while.

Weekly Round-up - March 24, 2007

About the hardware...
  • Toshiba (America) has announced that the list prices for HD-A2 & HD-A20 will be reduced come April 1. The higher-end model HD-XA2 now has a listed price of $799 instead of $999. HD-A2 will be priced at $399 instead of $499 and HD-A20 (similar to HD-A2 but capable of 1080p video output) will be priced at $499 instead of $599.
  • Sound And Vision Magazine's piece of review on the latest HD DVD player, HD-XA2, is up online. It can be read via this link. Overall, a positive review in my opinion.
  • Currently, only HD DVD-R/HD DVD-ROM drives are being produced & shipped. I believe Toshiba, Acer and a few other vendors are offering PC/laptop line-up with such drives built-in.
  • Firmware Updates:
    - HD-XA2/D2/A2/A20 - Version1.3
    - HD-XA2/XF2 (Japan) - Version 1.3
    - HD-XE1/E1 - Version 1.3
    - HD-XA1 (Japan) - Version 2.1
    - HD-XA1/A1/D1 (North America) - Version 2.0

About the software...

  • Studio Canal has confirmed that the 15 HD DVD titles will be released on May 21 instead of March 26 (after a first delay from March 5). It is reportedly due to the inclusion of the updated AACS layer in the discs. Further details via this blogpost.

Tues Updates...(Updated)

  • Warner Home Video (Japan) has announced that Taking Lives (Unrated Director's Cut) will arrive on HD DVD in Japan, this June 8. This is possibly an indication that the same title will be released on HD DVD in North America, Europe and other regions soon. 'Freedom' - First Anime to Arrive on HD DVD in North America

Bandai Visual (US) and its parent company based in Japan, Bandai Visual Co. Ltd, have jointly announced the HD DVD release of Freedom - Vol 1 on June 26.

Freedom, which is the first HD DVD product from Bandai Visual, will be released in North America by Bandai Visual USA through their distributor Geneon Entertainment (USA). The product will also be available in Japan at .ANIME (www.dot-anime.com), an integrated online anime portal operated by Anime Channel Co., Ltd.

Freedom Vol 1 will be released on the HD DVD/DVD Twin Format disc, that is a single-sided disc containing both the SD and HD versions of the main feature, and can be played back on both DVD and HD DVD players. No flipping required. The title is encoded using VC-1 (with the latest improvements to achieve higher visual quality for Japanese anime on HD DVD). Japanese audio is provided with English subtitles. Extras include a special prologue to the series and trailers from the Freedom Previsited DVD. It will also include HDi network function which will offer new ways to enjoy the product. It will be priced at $39.99 in North America and around 5,040 Yen (inclusive of relevant taxes) in Japan. Pre-orders for this HD DVD title will be accepted starting March 22, for the Japanese market.

Freedom is a science fiction anime series whose use in Nissin instant noodle TV ads created much attention in Japan. The drama unfolds on the moon’s surface in the city of Eden, the last human settlement, and focuses on a youth whose actions threaten to shake the freedom and peace of Eden. The scale of the story and the dynamic action have earned the series high marks.

Some Updates...

  • Previously, we reported earlier that Smokin' Aces may be the first HD DVD to take advantage of the Internet connectivity of HD DVD players as it contains the special feature - U-Control Assassins Tracker - which uses Google Maps to track the assassins during the film. Its been confirmed that this feature will not require web connectivity.
  • But 3 HD DVD titles to be released this year will contain special features that will take advantage of Internet connectivity, which has been a standard feature of all HD DVD players (with the official HD DVD logo) released to date and will continue to be so.
  • Our HD DVD release list has been updated with all the new announcements from Universal Studios and Warner.

HD DVD Gains Momentum Across Europe

Hollywood and European Studios Show Broad Support with Nearly 600 Titles Expected in 2007; European Promotional Group Formed

Highlights of the Press Release:
  • Toshiba announced a new HD DVD player for the European market, the HD-EP10. This mid-range model, which features 1080p output, was designed to meet the increasing consumer demand for 1080p HDTVs. The new player, priced at 699 Euros, rounds out Toshiba's product line-up, and will be available in May 2007.
  • Among the more innovative of the world's first class manufacturers that have recently added to the breadth of the HD DVD family are Samsung, Lite-On, Alco, Jiangkui/ED Digital, Meridian, Onkyo, and Shinco.
  • By the end of Q1 2007, more than 100 titles will be available throughout Europe. More than one-third of these titles come from European studios and none of them are currently available on any other high-definition format. The overwhelming majority of the discs are replicated locally. With more than 21 studios and distributors, 14 authoring studios and eight replicators producing HD DVD content and discs throughout the region, the number of titles is expected to increase rapidly throughout the year with an estimated 600 titles expected worldwide by December 2007.
  • Examples of the wide range of content originating in Europe include Stalingrad (Enemy at the Gate), 2 brothers, Les Choristes, La Grande Vadrouille, L'Armee des Ombres, Le Cercle Rouge, Das Parfum, Graf Montenegro, and La Tigre e la Neve.
  • Hollywood studios also made a strong commitment to the market and announcing the release of several great US titles including "Babel," "Casino," "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory," "Dreamgirls," "Happy Feet," "The Holiday," "The Matrix Trilogy," "Ray," and "World Trade Center." All of these titles will feature multiple language tracks allowing seamless viewing in a variety of countries. Studios also announced expansion into a greater number of European countries and are committed to announcing HD DVD titles on the same day and date as DVDs wherever possible.
  • HD DVD titles with advanced interactivity will take advantage of HD DVD's mandatory specifications for network connectivity, secondary video decoders and persistent storage. Titles using player memory as well as the secondary video encoder for picture-in-picture were shipping throughout 2006, and titles using network connectivity are expected to be available in 2007. Using Microsoft's HDi interactive technology, the live demo showed how to download HD trailers and other content from the Internet, synchronized storyboard playback seamlessly switching between full screen mode and story board and subtitle download. To date, HD DVD is the only format delivering titles using true picture-in-picture.
