Full Details of Concorde's HD DVD Releases in Germany
As promised earlier, we now have the official disc specifications and cover artwork of Concorde Home Entertainment's upcoming HD DVD releases, all of which will be available at retail in Germany on September 3. What's significant is that some of the HD DVD titles being released are currently still not available on HD DVD in other parts of the world - such as The Jackal, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - Cradle of Life, Silent Hill, etc. The HD-30 disc is used for these HD DVD titles. Optional German subtitles are provided.
Should there be any changes to the specs later, it will be reflected on this blogpost (Bookmark the link to this blogpost).
And lastly, thanks to our reader Diabolo, who had initially provided the heads-up on some of Concorde's HD DVD releases enabling me to follow-up on it and provide the official details/artwork here on this blog.

5 Comments:
It's unfortunate that they are releasing the dubbed audio tracks in the higher resolution format over the original english audio tracks.
I was considering purchasing a couple but there really is no point if I can't have the Master Audio in my native language.
I can see where they're coming from, but to my knowledge the other foreign HD DVD releases to date favor the native tracks over the dubs.
This is upsetting.
When we received the official information, it was mentioned that the details are subject to change especially the English audio tracks.
English audio on all releases will definitely be in DTS-HD format but it is too early to tell whether some or all of it will be in DTS-HD Master Audio. Hence, there's still a possibility of English DTS-HD Master Audio on some or all of these releases.
That's precisely why I mentioned that if changes are made to the specs especially the English audio tracks, then this blogpost will be updated.
Do stay tuned...
At least for me, if The Jackal looks pretty good on HD DVD, then I don't really mind not having the English audio in lossless audio format.
Of course, great visuals couple with lossless audio, makes it a must-buy. But I can live with DTS-HR...being a nice upgrade.
I do hope that it does change. I was really looking forward to potential upgrades with regard to this foreign release of 12 Monkeys. To have lossless audio with that title would be incredible, even though it's not one of the first titles that come to mind that offer much by the way of a dense sound field.
I was also hoping to read some reviews about the video quality, as the US release is said to be somewhat inconsistent in it's transfer.
I hope that the problems aren't entirely tied to the master, otherwise we might never see a "perfect" representation of the film.
Also, have you all considered writing reviews about some/all of these international releases? As far as I can tell there is no one that does, nor do I know of anywhere else to find information as comprehensive as you all have assembled here.
If you've noticed I actually refrained from writing HD DVD reviews because of a few reasons. One is that I simply don't have the time to do a proper video/audio quality review... doing a substandard one makes no point at all and hurts my credibility.
Next reason is that reviews have a rather high percentage of subjectivity, it is always likely that a counter-argument pop-ups to whatever good or bad that one mentions. For instance, some scenes look fine (not exactly great) to me, but some reviews insist that the compression artifacts (due to so-called low bitrates) or other issues plague those scenes making them impossible to watch on a comparable screen or so I read. Maybe that just applies to me.
To sum up, it was mentioned in the press release that these HD DVD titles from Concorde are produced/encoded in partnership with Sonopress and Encodingstudio DMP.
Since the press release specifically/officially mentioned the partnership and the likelihood that these titles will be exhibited at the IFA 2007 in Berlin, I guess the video/audio quality on these discs should be pretty good
