MPEG LA Expands Call for HD DVD Patents

In its continued response to marketplace interest in the creation of a joint HD DVD patent license including as much essential intellectual property as possible, MPEG LA, LLC today expanded its call for patents essential to the implementation of the HD DVD Standard to include the following specifications:
  1. DVD Specifications for High Density Read-Only Disc (HD DVD-ROM) Part 1 Optional Specifications: Triple Layer Twin Format Disc; and
  2. DVD Specifications for High Density Read-Only Disc (HD DVD-ROM) Part 1 Physical Specifications (51 Gbytes).

MPEG LA’s plan for forming a joint patent portfolio license to provide users with fair, reasonable, nondiscriminatory access to the HD DVD technology as an alternative to negotiating separate licenses was first announced in a 9 May 2007 news release.

The inclusion of the DVD Specifications for High Density Read-Only Disc (HD DVD-ROM) Part 1 Optional Specifications: Triple Layer Twin Format Disc and for DVD Specifications for High Density Read-Only Disc (HD DVD-ROM) Part 1 Physical Specifications (51 Gbytes) are in addition to the other parts of the Standard earlier announced.

MPEG LA welcomes any party that believes it has patents which are essential to the HD DVD Standard to submit them for evaluation of their essentiality by MPEG LA’s patent evaluators and participate in the joint license creation process if determined to be essential. Further information, along with terms and procedures governing patent submissions, can be found at http://www.mpegla.com/pid/hddvd. While only issued patents that are essential to the HD DVD Standard will be included in the license, in order to participate in the license development process, patent applications with claims that their owners believe are essential to the HD DVD Standard and likely to issue in a patent also may be submitted for an evaluation of essentiality.

'Beowulf - Director's Cut' Announced for HD DVD

[North America]

Paramount Home Entertainment has just announced that Beowulf - Director's Cut will be available to own in high-definition exclusively on HD DVD, come February 29 (day-and-date with the DVD), for $39.99 SRP a copy.

We know that this title will not be an HD DVD-exclusive in some other countries and it has come to our attention that the HD DVD release in other countries will not have picture-in-picture track and web-enabled features.

Therefore, if you've come to appreciate the enhanced and advanced home entertainment experience - picture-in-picture track and web-enabled features - that the HD DVD format now offers, we recommend that you get this North American HD DVD release from Paramount (Since there's no region coding being established for HD DVD yet, the disc will remain playable in the future since it isn't region coded at the time of pressing.)

Main feature will be presented in
  • 1080p High-Definition Widescreen 2.35:1
  • Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English)
    Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English, French & Spanish)
  • English [SDH], French & Spanish subtitle options.

Bonus materials include but may not be limited to:

  • Web Enabled - Beowulf Profiler
  • Additional Scenes
  • Documentary plus lots of featurettes covering almost all aspects of the story and movie, from pre-production to post-production.

The list of additional scenes and featurettes is pretty long and many websites have already posted the information. If you need the entire list of additional scenes and featurettes, they can be found on this page from DVD Town.com.

Warner's Upcoming HD DVD Titles Delayed by At Least 3 Weeks...

[North America]

[Jan 11, 2008] - Originally posted.
[Jan 18, 2008] - Updated with the latest changes.

In line with Warner's latest decision, all upcoming HD DVD/DVD Combo titles will be released after a short window following the DVD release. This practice will remain so until end of May 2008. Until then, HD DVD release of all catalog titles such as Twister (1997) seems to remain unaffected by this practice.

However, starting June 2008, Warner will stop releasing any of its movies on HD DVD. We're very disappointed with Warner's latest decision to stop releasing on HD DVD after May 2008.

Currently the upcoming HD DVD titles affected by this new decision are as follows:

Toshiba's Qosmio G45 now with world's first notebook HD DVD-R/RW optical drive

Toshiba's Digital Product Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced it lowered the starting price on its HD DVD notebook line to $899 ESUP, starting with the Satellite A205 notebook. In addition to the new pricing structure, Toshiba incorporated the world's first notebook HD DVD-R/RW optical drive into the Qosmio G45, and collectively boosted the greater overall power and functionality of its full lineup of HD DVD enabled notebook computers.

With an $899 starting price more users now have access to the industry's most complete portfolio of leading high-definition notebook computers. Also, with the addition of an HD DVD rewritable drive Qosmio users are empowered with the ability to burn, erase and re-burn content to HD DVD-RW discs. The Toshiba HD DVD notebook portfolio consists of four models featuring high-definition widescreen displays with resolutions up to 1080p and screen sizes ranging from 15.4- to 17-inches. The portfolio includes the Satellite A205, Satellite P205, Satellite X205 and Qosmio G45 models.

For a limited time, with the purchase of an HD DVD enabled Toshiba notebook, consumers qualify to receive five HD DVD movie titles for free, from a selection of 15 popular titles, via a mail-in offer. Eligible models and complete offer details are available at http://www.toshibadirect.com/hddvdpc, and the promotion is valid until February 28, 2008.

The convergence of high-definition with the widespread appeal of the DVD format has lead to the creation of the new HD DVD format. The next-generation technology of HD DVD provides an unsurpassed experience in terms of resolution and interactivity. While today's DVD format has a maximum playback resolution of 480p, HD DVDs leap forward with an image resolution that is up to six times sharper. The result is a visual experience with brighter colors, enhanced details and greater overall image sharpness.

Designed to be a truly interactive medium, HD DVD delivers an unprecedented experience that will change how people watch and enjoy their movies. Available to users are features, such as picture-in-picture director's commentary and instant scene book-marking, for instant access to a user's favorite scenes on-the-fly. Unlike today's DVD viewing experience, many HD DVD interactive features can be enjoyed while the film is being viewed. Additionally, an HD DVD enabled notebook is compatible with all of today's standard-definition DVD titles, ensuring that a user's collection of DVD movies is not left obsolete.

For a more expansive viewing experience, select Toshiba HD DVD enabled notebooks include an HDMI port and can be connected to an HDTV to deliver a pure high-definition image that will equal the resolution capability of the HDTV, up to 1080p.

The Qosmio G45, Satellite X205, Satellite P205 and Satellite A205 featuring HD DVD drives will be available at http://www.toshibadirect.com/ and at a variety of major consumer electronics and computer stores nationwide.

CES 2008 - Maxell Introduces New Lens Cleaner to Keep Consumers' Viewing Experiences Fresh and Spotless

Maxell Corporation of America has introduced an innovative lens cleaning solution that supports the cleaning of lenses found in HD DVD players.

The cleaning process is simple. While located in the player, the disc rotates and generates an air stream in a spiral motion and that air stream then changes to air shower on the lens when it passes through the holes. The power of the air shower removes dust particles on the lens without damaging the surface of the product.

This new Lens Cleaner will be available in March 2008 for a suggested retail price of $24.99.

CES 2008 - Verbatim Adds World's First 2x-Speed HD DVD Recordable Media to Industry's Broadest HD DVD Media Product Line

Verbatim Americas, LLC announced today that it will begin shipping the world's first 2x-speed HD DVD-R (recordable) and HD DVD-RW (rewriteable) discs this quarter. By adding the new HD DVD recordable media to its current offerings, Verbatim now offers the industry's broadest range of premium-quality HD DVD media products. The complete HD DVD media product line, including Verbatim's 2x HD DVD R/RW media and its 1x HD DVD-R DL media will be showcased at Verbatim's CES Booth #S4-36249 in the South Hall this week.

Verbatim 2x-speed HD DVD-R/RW Media -- At 2x-speed Verbatim's new recordable and rewriteable HD DVDs slash the time required to fill a 15GB HD DVD disc to about 30 minutes, compared to about 1 hour at 1x speed. HD DVD media supports the Advanced Access Content System copy-protection technology.

To achieve the higher performance required for 2x write speeds, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), Verbatim's parent company, leveraged its proven dye technology to develop a new highly sensitive recording layer. The recording characteristics of Verbatim HD DVD-R discs are further enhanced by the disc's physical attributes. Features such as a uniform groove shape, consistent substrate thickness and flatness of the disc have been proven to optimize the performance and longevity of Verbatim media. These characteristics are achieved using a new mastering process, ultra-precise molding technology and advanced bonding techniques developed by MKM. To achieve the narrow track pitch of the HD DVD format, MKM also developed a stamper with a precise groove shape.

Verbatim's single-sided, dual layer HD DVD-R Media has been available in Japan since July of 2006 and began shipping to its North American customers when compatible hardware became available in Q1 2007. Verbatim's HD DVD DL media supports the Advanced Access Content System copy-protection technology.

To achieve the best balance of reflectivity, transmission and absorption for both recording layers, MKM developed a new highly sensitive recording dye. The high recording sensitivity plus the wider power margin of the new recording layer ensure a low error rate, regardless of drive power fluctuations or smudges on the disc surface. Highly resistant to sunlight and heat, the media provides ultra-stable recording characteristics for a lifetime of high performance -- even after long periods of storage -- for both recorded and unrecorded media.

Verbatim/MKM is a general member of the HD DVD Promotion Group and a charter member of the DVD Forum.

CES 2008 - HD DVD Rallies Consumer Audience in 2007 Driving Nearly One Million Dedicated Player Sales in North America

Reproduced here is the press release from the North American HD DVD Promotional Group...

HD DVD software sales increase during key holiday season, consistent with higher player ownership

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Showin Las Vegas, the companies of the HD DVD Promotional Group recapped a breakthrough year for the high definition format, reaching nearly one million dedicated HD DVD players sold in North America and delivering on the promise of affordability, quality and a consistent experience on every machine. With a leading install base of dedicated players, there are now more than 400 titles available in the US and more than 1,000 titles available worldwide. During the key five week holiday selling period, HD DVD software sales grew at nearly twice the rate of Blu-ray, which was consistent with increased player growth.

"Our focus from day one has been to deliver the highest quality hardware and the best, most immersive home entertainment experiences for consumers at affordable prices," said Jodi Sally, vice president of marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "With nearly one million dedicated players in the market in North America, and a leading position in the PC market worldwide, we're seeing software growth follow suit."

As the industry looks for a format that can break into the mainstream consumer market, HD DVD continues to be the affordable, high quality leader, setting the bar for a positive consumer experience. Through a combination of quality and price, HD DVD meets the essential requirements for any format to successfully reach the mass market.

Strong Hardware and Title Growth

In 2007, HD DVD reached a broader group of consumers than ever before, showing strong movie title sales and high attach rates stemming from the major influx of dedicated HD DVD players on the market. Based on Nielsen data, when comparing first week consumer sales, "The Bourne Ultimatum" on HD DVD outsold "Spiderman 3" on Blu-ray. Among all high definition formats, HD DVD still maintains the highest attach rates -- more than twice the rate of Blu-ray.

"The HD DVD camp has always stuck to a simple set of principles," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing forUniversal Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group. "Give consumers who buy into HD DVD what they paid for. In fact, give them more than they expected. Show them that quality and value go hand in hand with HD DVD. Show them what advanced interactivity really means and how it can enrich your favorite movies that you watch over and over."

To this point, Toshiba's HD DVD players received several Editor's Choice and Product of the Year awards from respected media outlets, including Sound & Vision, Electronic House, E-Gear, and Ultimate AV.

On the PC front, the HD DVD Promotional Group announced that by the end of 2007, HD DVD-enabled PCs represented more than 80% of all high definition-capable PCs. The HD DVD companies expect notebook PCs in particular to be the variable that helps keep quality high, but prices low, by driving down manufacturing costs for drives across all HD DVD players.

Global Studio Support

A critical milestone for HD DVD in helping to drive strong sales across the board was the strong support from Hollywood studios and global content providers. In 2007, HD DVD went from being supported by 41 studios and distributors worldwide to 65.

Groundbreaking Interactive Features

Using Microsoft's HDi technology, HD DVD led the way in 2007 with never-before-seen interactive experiences that have changed how consumers interact with their favorite movies. HD DVD was the first to offer true picture in picture director's commentary in 2007 with Warner's "300". This feature was not included in the Blu-ray version, and showcases a key HD DVD feature that caters directly to the fan community. Universal's "Heroes" and Paramount's "Transformers" also included picture in picture features that enhance the experience for fans.

HD DVD was also the first to deliver web-connected content, offering bonus material on titles such as "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Heroes: Season 1," and "Transformers" -- all offering downloadable content that's continually updated so fans of the movie can return for new features. The interactive elements are all designed to promote an enhanced "second look" environment and to rally the fan communities around key titles. In addition, Universal launched U-Shop, an extension of the U-Control feature, letting you buy items related to a movie directly through the guaranteed internet connection on every HD DVD player. Universal's "Evan Almighty" was the first title to showcase this, illustrating what can be done when every player on the market can access these features.

As the official successor to DVD, HD DVD has added to the heritage of the most successful consumer electronics format ever, bringing the highest quality HD experiences to consumers at the most affordable prices. The HD DVD Booth at CES 2008 is located in South Hall 1 (booth #21266).

With the HD DVD format, consumers can experience true high def 1080p resolution for extraordinary detail that matches the latest state of the art 1080p HDTVs. Select Toshiba HD DVD players display images at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate used by directors when using film to create motion pictures, for a smoother, more film like, viewing experience.

Toshiba's third generation family starts with the entry level HD-A3 player featuring 1080i output capability. Its products, including the third generation HD DVD players, meet Toshiba's voluntary environmental standards and ongoing efforts to bring eco-conscious products to market and comply with the company's strict environmental policies. Environmental management is promoted both from the standpoint of improving products themselves and renewing manufacturing processes, which not only calls for the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in products, but also to avoid using such substances in any manufacturing process.

For example, Toshiba HD DVD players are compliant with the EU RoHS Directive, a European Union environmental directive that restricts the use of six hazardous substances, including lead, mercury and cadmium. Also, for energy conservation, all third generation players meet the Energy Star standard. Warner Bros will be releasing HD DVD titles until May '08

Statement taken the press release from Time Warner Newsroom...

"... all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008."

HD DVD Promotional Group statement...

"While Warner's decision is a setback for HD DVD, the consumer has benefited from HD DVD's commitment to quality and affordability -- a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format. We believe widespread adoption of a next generation format will ultimately be determined by the consumer."

Our opinion...

Warner Bros. has had many quality HD DVD releases over the past 2 years... classic films such as Casablanca, newer ones such as Harry Potter and The Matrix Trilogy with HD DVD-exclusive In-Movie Experience! feature (which we appreciate everytime it is included Warner's HD DVD releases) and we, as consumers, are disappointed that they are not going to continue release content on our preferred format after May 2008. Nevertheless, life still goes on (Compared with oil prices hitting a record US$100 per barrel, this piece news seemed less troubling.) and we will still be continuing our coverage of HD DVD titles on this blog.

Happy New Year!

As the year 2007 comes to a close in various countries (its already 2008 in quite a number of countries), we would like to take this opportunity to thank all readers for continuing to make us one of your preferred source for news and information on the HD DVD format.

We believe that 2008 will be a pretty exciting year for high-definition content on HD DVD. Last year, our wishes of The Matrix Trilogy and Harry Potter series being released on HD DVD came true. Currently, we're still compiling our wishlist for this year and it'll still include Back to the Future trilogy that appeared on our wishlist last year. Our mini-wishlist should be posted on the day of this blog's 2nd birthday.

We would also like to thank all parties who have in one way or another helped this blog provide relevant information and news to anyone interested in HD DVD, and thus expanding the blog's audience reach.

Thank you for the tremendous support that you have given to us the past year.

Happy Holidays and Best wishes for the year ahead!

Wild Bear & J.Z.
